Convenient and hidden getaway along The Great Ocean Road at The Boomerangs at Johanna.
While researching places to stay during our road trip along the Great Ocean Road, I stumbled upon the coolest space—cottages in the shape of boomerangs! It doesn’t get more Australian than that! Working it into our weeklong adventure, I’m so happy to have stumbled on this unique and relaxing space with the sweetest hosts.
Made up of three cottages, the owners Mark and Roz built The Boomerangs from scratch about 30 years ago. While teaching English in Japan, Mark dreamt of cottages overlooking a beautiful landscape in his Australian homeland. Working with a local builder while abroad in Japan, they designed and planned the cottages all over fax (this was pre-Internet!) The boomerang idea came about because of its uniqueness to Australia as well as the design naturally lending itself to expansive valley views.
Speaking with them, it’s apparent this is their passion and they genuinely want their guests to love the area as much as they do. After building the three cottages, they built the boomerang “mothership”, which became their home on the property.
Walking into the fully furnished cottage, the first thing you notice is the amount of light being flooded into the room. Floor-to-ceiling windows cover one entire side of the boomerang, yet it doesn’t take away from the feeling of seclusion and privacy. From the high-end amenities to the aboriginal art, fireplace and electric blankets to the BBQ grill, they seem to have thought of every detail to ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible.
Surrounding the cottages are lush flower beds planted by Mark, who takes care of the gardening on the property. Walking around, it’s apparent he takes pride in keeping the space beautiful for his guests to enjoy. Adding to the ‘homey’ feel, they even provide a pair of gardening scissors for guests to make their own bouquets. It’s these thoughtful details that made our stay so enjoyable.
Mark and Roz were the perfect hosts! They were incredibly helpful and kind, offering us local spots to visit like where to see kangaroos in the wild along the Great Ocean Walk. It felt like we were staying with an old friend who knew the best spots in the area. Hannah, their dog and chief greeter, also added a playful feel overall. We’d randomly find her running around the gardens during our walks.
Hidden amongst rolling hills, the cottages are located midway along the Great Ocean Road in Otway National Park. Most famous for the 12 Apostles, the area has much more to offer than just beautiful rock formations and gorgeous coastlines. I was pleasantly surprised by the sheer variation in activities and natural wonders. Some of my favorite places near The Boomerangs include:
Johanna Beach: A quick 10 minute drive with expansive coastlines and never-ending waves. Be sure to catch the sunset here!
Melba Gully: A nature walk with glowworms lining the pathways at night. Best to wait until it’s pitch black to see them fully.
Mait’s Rainforest Walk: One of the most fairy-like forests I’ve ever been to. Comparable to the Hoh Rainforest in Olympic National Park in Washington State.
The Great Ocean Walk: Did you know there’s a 7-day walk you can do along the coastline? We ended up doing part of it near Johanna Beach, had a picnic and looked for kangaroos in the valley! For more information about the Walk, click here.
For anyone looking for a quiet hideaway in the country or a comfortable cottage to stay along The Great Ocean Road, this is the perfect spot!
